Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)

Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is a program for high school students interested in developing skills, knowledge and confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By participating in JSHS, students have the opportunity to present original research at the regional and national-level symposia and the chance to win scholarships, cash prizes, public recognition and other distinctions.

More Information

Students are engaged in hands-on workshops, panel discussions, visits to research labs, and networking and career development opportunities.

JSHS regional and national symposia are held during the school year and reach more than 10,000 high school students and teachers throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Department of Defense Schools of Europe and the Pacific Rim. Each of the 48 regional symposia leaders invite high school students within their region to apply.

If accepted, students are asked to submit a written report and deliver an oral presentation about their original research at their regional symposia to demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry, discovery and analysis. Teachers and school administrators are encouraged to help students become involved in regional JSHS competitions. Each year JSHS recognizes one teacher from each region for the contributions that he or she makes to advance student participation in scientific research

The National JSHS brings together approximately 250 high school students who qualified from the regional level. Nearly 100 adult leaders, high school teachers, university faculty, ranking military guests and parents attend the national competition to observe and celebrate the high-performing students’ research presentations.

JSHS is collaboration between the research offices of the United States Departments of the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Academy of Applied Science and leading research universities throughout the nation. The Department of Defense provides funding for the National Symposium and JSHS scholarships.

JSHS helps prepare students for higher education and STEM careers with the hope that someday the students conduct STEM research on behalf of or directly for the Department of Defense, the Federal research laboratories or in the public or private sector.
