U.S. Army – Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence Nominations Open

Nov 13, 2017

The U.S. Army and the Pro Football Hall of Fame are currently accepting nominations for their annual awards program, which nationally recognizes 25 high school student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics and community service.

The U.S. Army – Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence is open to all sophomore, junior and senior high school student-athletes in the United States and at Department of Defense schools.

2017 Pro Football Hall of Fame Award of Excellence winner Emily Scott poses with Mr. Mark Davis, former deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing and U.S. Army Soldiers.

“This program recognizes student-athletes who not only excel athletically and academically, but they are leaders in their communities,” said Mark Davis, former deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing. "Like our Soldiers, they understand the importance of leadership, teamwork and strive to be something more by doing more, not just for themselves but for their team, family and community."

To be nominated students must be a current, active member on a school athletic team and have completed at least one season of play, hold a minimum 3.5 GPA on an unweighted scale, and be involved with and/or support the local community through volunteering or mentoring for any non-work or non-school related organization.

The nomination process also includes three letters of recommendation; one from each a school representative, a team coach, and a community service organization representative. Each student will also write and submit a 500 word essay defining the habits of Excellence that they have experienced.

"The Award for Excellence program celebrates the achievements of extraordinary high school-aged individuals who will shape the future of our country," said David Baker, the Pro Football Hall of Fame's president & CEO. "The Pro Football Hall of Fame appreciates the U.S. Army's support and commitment in shining the light on the values shared by these great young people and our Hall of Famers."

All nomination information is due via email to USArmy@ProFootballHOF.com on January 12, 2018. Once nominations have been submitted, a judging panel, comprised of Pro Football Hall of Fame executives, Professional Football Hall of Fame athletes and U.S. Army representatives, will review all submissions and 25 Award finalists will be notified on February 5, 2018.

This spring, each finalist will be honored by Army Soldiers and a Gold Jacket (a term used to refer to living members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame) during an event at his or her high school. Then in August, all 25 finalists will convene in Canton, Ohio, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls. The finalists will be honored throughout the festivities, including the Hall of Fame Game, the NFL’s preseason opener. The 2018 Award for Excellence winner will be selected during a special recognition on Saturday, August 4, 2018. He or she will also receive a $2,500 grant from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and will also be recognized during the Enshrinement Ceremony.
