High School Principals and Counselors Join U.S. Army for Three-Day Summit on Leadership; Professional Development

Warm, summer-like skies shone over Fort Leavenworth on November 2-4, 2016 as elite educators from across the country gathered for the U.S. Army’s fourth annual Leadership and Professional Development Symposium. Thirty-nine members of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) joined senior leaders, recruiters and education experts from the Army. The three-day meeting was packed full of sessions focusing on leadership development, professional growth and “Army 101.”

The symposium featured a robust itinerary of workshops, lectures and collaborative discussion sessions designed to provide attendees with tangible best practices and tools while exposing them to the basic tenets of Army leadership. Throughout the event, attendees were able to speak with Soldiers, from young ROTC Cadets at the beginning of their Army journey to Generals at the pinnacle of their expansive Army careers. Break-out sessions with Army senior leaders allowed educators to speak one-on-one with General Officers, who shared leadership insights related to their respective Commands and from their own Army stories.

The event, hosted by Mr. Mark Davis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Marketing) and Director of the Army Marketing and Research Group (AMRG), gathered a diverse group of Army leaders, all with different backgrounds, to provide important touch points for attending educators. Lt. Gen. Michael Lundy, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, brought perspective from his leadership of the Army’s training and leader development functions. Maj. Gen. Chris Hughes, Commanding General of U.S. Army Cadet Command (USACC) and Fort Knox, Ky., and Brig. Gen. Donna Martin, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC), shared their experiences working to develop young Officers and enlisted Soldiers. Brig. Gen. Eugene LeBoeuf, Deputy Commanding General of The Army University and a U.S. Army Reserve Officer, led a discussion on the Army’s investment in and commitment to education and training, centered at Fort Leavenworth.

Another highlight of the symposium was a team-building exercise, led by members of the Kansas City Recruiting Battalion. Groups had to quickly establish team cohesion and work out a collective approach to take on a series of Scrabble-inspired word construction challenges, complete with a spirit of healthy competition.

Over the course of the three days, attendees gained a number of actionable tools and learnings to apply in their own schools and professional environments. They heard from Army Education Services Specialists (ESSs), recruiters and Army ROTC Professors of Military Science at local/regional universities, and learned about the many resources the Army provides to educators and students across the country. 

At the close of the symposium, reflection sessions between NASSP, ASCA and the U.S. Army unearthed one undeniable truth: The U.S. Army and American education – both institutions in their own right – have more similarities than differences, and by working together, they can more effectively face their common challenges, and share in the support of their critical mission: to support America’s youth while preparing them to pursue successful post-secondary opportunities and fulfilling careers.
